Parenthood: Episode 404

"The Talk" Yet another amazing installment of this ingenius show last night. It's so funny what a difference quality TV makes when you compare it to what you used to waste your time watching. Obviously, I am guilty of having a secret love for Jersey Shore which is horrible to admit, but when I compare Parenthood to the likes of other shows that I used to be obsessed with; like Gossip Girl or even Private Practice, I see such a huge difference in the caliber of the program.

Something interesting my dad noted last night was the fact that some shows grip you because of the supernatural events that occur. Take LOST or Breaking Bad for example, two of my family's favorite shows to date. Both these shows engage us because we're constantly in search of the thrill and the excitement for what's about to happen next. What do the LOST numbers mean? Who is Jacob? What is the smoke monster?

But when you look at Parenthood... there is no "crazy" event taking place or unreal cliffhanger at the end of every episode. It's just real life. Not edited, not puffed up, not glamorized. It's what we can all relate to because we're all going through life in this same day to day fashion as the show illustrates. I think it almost takes more talent as a writer to come up with a way to portray these life events in a way that they don't seem too exaggerated; and Parenthood does a superb job of this. The show simply tells it like it is. One day you're helping your kids prepare for campaigning in student government and the next day you're told you have cancer. It's so heart wrenching because that is precisely what life is -- a series of moments that are memories to take with you for a lifetime, or other moments you wish you could forget altogether. Unexpected, unpredictable, and random.

As I watched last night, I was waiting for the big reveal with Kristina would share the news with her entire family about her diagnosis. Guess we have to wait another week for that emotional conversation! But I actually enjoyed the fact that they aren't rushing into that moment and making it over dramatic. It's more realistic this way. I love watching Adam's transition from being the one who was completely in control to surrendering a bit of that control as he releases he needs to loosen his grip. The cancer is what's fully in control now, and they both are slowly coming to realize that.

Amanda Peet seriously needs an Emmy for her performance as Kristina, week after week. She is so unbelievably talented!! Even with her facial expressions she melts your heart. The fact that she is so "THAT" mom that puts herself last and puts the family first kills me. She reminds me a lot of my own mom in that sense. Constantly looking into their needs over her own, to the point that she's even willing to reschedule her surgery so she can be there for Max's election day.

I'm looking forward to seeing where that goes next week and for when they break the news to Haddie. But trust me, I haven't missed Haddie on the show one bit. Along the same lines, Zeke's story line was completely useless last night. That was one disappointment. No one cares about your sprinklers and the fact that you feel like you need a hobby? LOL. I liked the little message about being thankful for our soldiers though, but still, the plot point was altogether just a little random.

I think what gripped me the most was Jabbar's story line. It was so awesome to see how Jazmyne handled him hearing the N-word. It's funny because I feel like viewers watching can literally LEARN how to parent from watching this show. She spoke so eloquently. And tying in there the fact that Crosby feels left out or that he can't relate literally killed me. Dax Shepard is another one of their actors who blows me away. Just watching him sit there and stare at Jabbar with tears in his eyes as Jazmyne spoke. His facial expressions, the pain, the desire to want to be able to do something but not being able too-- he was able to evoke ALL of that just by the look in his eyes. Hands down, my favorite character on the show. That story line was much needed and I applaud the writers for including that in this episode.

Finally, it was great to see more of Joel on Parenthood. Back in the first few seasons he almost seemed like a back-up character (with the likes of Drew and Sydney almost!) It was so good to see the arc centered only around him and Victor.. not even Julia. He is such a sweet guy. Simply put. It killed me when Victor yelled at him and said "you're not my real dad." But then to see the humility it took for him to approach Victor and tell him how proud he was of him -- ah stab me in the heart!! Such unconditional love. And that my friends is a true father.

Altogether, I don't think I can ever come across a "bad" episode of this show. And my favorite part of watching Parenthood is the fact that I watch it with my parents. And each week we're just left with tears in our eyes and my dad is going off about how freaking amazing it is. And I could not agree more. Epic writing/ epic acting. What more could you want?

Homeland: Season 2 Premiere

FINALLY! Ah I am so sorry for being late on this post! But better late than never, eh readers? (you like what I did there.. pretending like I have readers?) :D So WOW.. I can't believe I waited until tonight to watch the Sunday night premiere of Season 2 of Homeland -- the incredible show that swept the Emmy stage last week with all of its wins. I could not have been happier with the premiere. I don't even know why I was a bit skeptical before I watched, but I was glued to my couch the full hour. Can I mention how awesome it is to watch a show with no commercials/ no need to fast forward through commercials even?! Thank you Showtime!

The writers did an excellent job in setting the stage for what is to come in the next 12 hours of this program. Although I'm not a huge fan of time jumps (especially between seasons), I was still satisfied with how things began at the start of this episode. Claire Danes you are a goddess... I don't know how she does it, but her acting is TOP notch. I'm so happy they didn't make her a couch potato or even completely forgetful about her past. I kept thinking the electroshock therapy at the end of last season would lead to her completely forgetting everything about the Brody/ Abu Nazir case. But she was almost normal, even!

Yeah, she's a bit shaky, but she seems to be doing really good... and this sets a perfect ground work for her to get even more involved with the CIA/ this case as the season progresses. Did they really think they could just fire her and it would be permanent? Come on, this girl is your lead eagle people. It won't be long until Estes and Saul are apologizing to her and calling her back onto the team for real.

Side note -- I can't even imagine the pain she must feel. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people don't believe you... and you KNOW you're right, so all you're trying to do is convince them, but they end up thinking you're crazy. Case in point: Carrie. So I truly feel for her. One quote from her from the teaser trailer for this season was, "I've never felt so right and been so wrong before." AH, all I want to do is just yell at the TV to her and say YOU. ARE. RIGHT. But of course that's what gets us hooked!

Back to the home front -- I'm not a huge believer in the fact that the current Vice President so suddenly is such a strong advocate of Brody running for VP in the next election. Really now? I mean, okay yes he's a war hero but what is all the fuss in bringing him into power? Obviously that's great for him in the long run so he knows the insider scoop on the government's plans, but still. That part is still a little unbelievable for me. Other than that... the Roya character. Wow. Shivers down my spine in the moment that she revealed to Brody she's working with Abu Nazir. Another great actress.

I haven't been a huge Dana lover since starting Homeland, but the premiere made me like her a little more. Maybe because her relationship with her dad really reminds me of my dad and I. They're more like BFF's than anything, and they both have one another's back no matter what. I really believe their relationship. As much as I despise her attitude, it's completely typical of any 16 year old girl.. especially rebelling against her mom; it's a given. I wonder how things will turn out with the reveal of Brody's Muslim conversion. I was thoroughly impressed with Jess' performance as she ran into the garage and began throwing things around. She's been an underdog for me in this show, with the other actors all surpassing her with their ability, but her monologue in that scene was awesome.

Of course, the show cuts RIGHT when we're about to find out if Carrie met up with her old spy. My favorite scene was her little smirk to herself as she threw off the guy chasing her, almost as if she's thinking, "Hey, I'm back in the game/ I got this." I'll give her props, that was one hell of an escape plan. Good for her.

All in all, such a packed episode. I'll admit though, Carrie's half of the storyline was a lot more exciting than Brody's.. but I know it will get even more intense as the show gets underway. Solid.

64th Annual Emmy's Roundup!

Image

Happy Monday everyone! Last night was one of my favorite nights of TV and I'm sure MANY of you tuned in to watch the annual Emmy awards! Sometimes I feel like equating my love for awards shows to how passionate men get about watching football games. I l i v e for watching these live telecasts -- from the red carpet, to analyzing if the host is funny or not, to catching the candid moments of each star as they're seated in the theatre -- I LOVE it.

Last night's show was actually better than last year in my opinion. I was nothing short of pleased with all the results. There is seriously so much talent on the air right now that it's almost sad that only 1 winner is awarded in each category! I also loved that there were more nominations for shows that are not on basic cable than there were those on cable! HBO led the nominations of course -- with Showtime following close behind.

To get right down to it -- HOMELAND ladies and germs! Um, if you haven't already started, I suggested you start now. Shameless plug - Season 2 starts in 5 days so you have a little bit of time to do a quick marathon and catch up on Season 1 (only 12 episodes). WOW. Don't get me wrong, Breaking Bad is probably my favorite show right now, but Homeland is also up there. And as a new show with its first season just wrapped, I think it deserves all of the hype it's getting, and then some! To win the Best Drama Series Emmy is HUGE for them. Not only does it really relish the reputation of the show, but it also marks the Showtime network's first Emmy win for Best Series. I am so happy for them. Not only did it take that prestigious award, but also Best Actress for the ingenious Claire Danes & the Best Actor award for the Brit (who know!?), Damien Lewis. Both I think are beyond well-deserved. Oh and lets not forget the best writing award too! Wow. What a night for them.

My heart was yearning for Breaking Bad to either take the Best Actor or Best Drama Series win, but I can't complain at all because Homeland is equal in my book. The writing, the story- line... it's so realistic especially for where we are at right now as a society and the acting is SO superb. I highly recommend this show to anyone looking for a new treat to indulge in!

Ok, moving on -- Best Supporting Actor... MY BOY, Aaron Paul, for the win for a second year in a row! YESSS. I can't explain how happy I was to see him win this award again. Watching him with tears of unbelief in his eyes and his complete humility as he spoke truly brought tears to my eyes as well. I felt like a proud parent, haha. This actor is beyond the caliber of the men his age in Hollywood right now. I love watching him on Breaking Bad and I can't wait to see the next project he takes on after it ends.

Other than that, some of the standouts to me was seeing Louis C.K. and his Emmy success! Three for the night! Good for him. My brother is a huge fan of him. I think he's alright but a little pretentious for my taste. I was a fan of his acceptance speeches though.

I think Jimmy Kimmel is just a little elementary for my taste as a host. I would have much rather had someone more animated like Jimmy Fallon or even Jon Stewart as a host. How predictable was that "In Memoriam" segment about himself? I don't know, it was alright, but I think they could have done a better job in choosing the host.

Other than that, I can't complain though, it was a night of simply shedding light on some WELL deserved talent that's out there right now. I encourage all of you to get into these shows that are nominated because they are well worth it.

Can't wait to for the fall line-up that starts in the next few weeks to come, and you can be sure I will be covering them all!

Good night
